The Lockheed Warning Star was used as a warning aircraft during the Cold War. Its objective was to detect if the Red Hordes ever came over the northern Atlantic and northern Pacific Oceans. It was a proof-of-concept, proving the possibility of equipping an aircraft with external radar. The Warning Star flew equipped with AN/APS-45 height finder radar on its back and AN/APS-20 air search radar on its belly. It is a descendant of the Constellation, another Lockheed Aircraft, but fitted with ventral and dorsal radar domes. The Warning Star was primarily used by the US Navy and Air Force, with the latter employing its services until the Vietnam War. The last Warning Star models were former members of the US Navy Fleet that had been turned over to the Air Force.
